You got married, congratulations!
Here’s a question I get all the time from newlyweds- do me and my wife need to have the same car insurance policy in Arizona? Some married couples like separate bank accounts, separate beds and separate friends, so they naturally want to keep their car insurance separate from each other, but can they?
Many younger married couples also like to stay listed on their parents car insurance policy. They do this for cheaper rates and because often, their parents are paying for their car insurance! They don’t want the free ride to end!
This Is Wrong!
Your spouse needs to be added to your car insurance. There is no way around it, this needs to happen. There are many scenarios where not having your spouse on the same policy as you can cause many issues when it comes claim time. Also, it makes sense to add your spouse to your policy. Most of the time, this will result in cheaper rates. The married discount is pretty significant. Insurance companies like that you are married. It means you are probably at home at 2:00 am rather than hanging out at the club and driving around intoxicated.
Anyone licensed in your house needs to be added
While we’re at it, if anyone in your home is licensed, they need to be added to your policy. If they are licensed and living in your house then the insurance company assumes that they have access to your car. If they have access to your car then there is a chance you could get in an accident. So you need to add these people and protect yourself!
