• If you’re out hiking at night use a flashlight.

• For reasons, other than just avoiding rattlesnakes, stay on marked trails. Your chances of seeing a rattlesnake are greatly decreased if you stay on the marked trails!

• Dress appropriately. Sandals and shorts are not appropriate clothing for hiking outdoors.
• Don’t try to give yourself first aid. Don’t try to suck out the venom, cut into the area that’s been bitten. Don’t use a tourniquet. Although you may be tempted to try to fix it yourself, don’t! Calmly (keep your heart rate down) make your way back to your car and call 911. Get yourself to a hospital as quickly as you can and allow them to treat you.
